Chennai is set to introduce open roof double-decker electric buses to enhance passenger travel experience and promote tourism. The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has proposed operating buses with an open-top upper deck to provide a unique city ride.
Boost to Tourism and Urban Transport
The initiative aims to improve public transport and support tourism, especially around key landmarks such as Marina Beach, Egmore Museum, Lighthouse, and Kannagi Statue.
20 Double-Decker Electric Buses Planned
Initially, 20 AC double-decker electric buses were planned. However, the contract has now been revised to include:
- 16 AC electric double-decker buses
- 4 non-AC open roof buses
12-Year Contract with 4,500 KM Monthly Guarantee
The revised contract spans 12 years, with each bus required to operate a minimum of 4,500 km per month. Operators will be paid on a per-kilometer basis and will also be responsible for maintenance and charging infrastructure.
Return of Double-Decker Buses in Chennai
Double-decker buses were first introduced in Chennai in 1970, discontinued in the 1980s, reintroduced in 1997, and finally stopped in 2008. The new electric open-top buses mark their grand return.
Soon, passengers will be able to enjoy panoramic city views — similar to open-top buses seen in global cities like London.
