The Madras High Court has directed the Chennai Corporation’s Chief Veterinary Officer to appear in person on August 12 with an action plan to control dangerous dog breeds such as Rottweilers, which pose a threat to the public.

The order came in response to a Public Interest Litigation filed by advocate R.S. Tamizhvendhan from Kodambakkam. The petition stated that aggressive foreign dog breeds are often taken into public spaces without muzzles or proper safety measures, resulting in attacks on children, women, and the elderly.

The case was heard by Chief Justice M.M. Srivatsava and Justice Sundar Mohan. During the hearing, the corporation’s counsel informed the court that a plan to curb dog attacks on the public is being prepared and requested more time.

The court then ordered the Chief Veterinary Officer to present the plan in person on August 12, specifically addressing measures to regulate or restrict aggressive dog breeds such as Rottweilers.
