The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has proposed operating buses with an open-top upper deck to provide a unique city ride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Boost to Tourism and Urban Transport<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative aims to improve public transport and support tourism, especially around key landmarks such as Marina Beach, Egmore Museum, Lighthouse, and Kannagi Statue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>20 Double-Decker Electric Buses Planned<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Initially, 20 AC double-decker electric buses were planned. However, the contract has now been revised to include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>16 AC electric double-decker buses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>4 non-AC open roof buses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>12-Year Contract with 4,500 KM Monthly Guarantee<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The revised contract spans 12 years, with each bus required to operate a minimum of 4,500 km per month. Operators will be paid on a per-kilometer basis and will also be responsible for maintenance and charging infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Return of Double-Decker Buses in Chennai<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Double-decker buses were first introduced in Chennai in 1970, discontinued in the 1980s, reintroduced in 1997, and finally stopped in 2008.
