{"id":1657,"date":"2025-11-28T04:25:56","date_gmt":"2025-11-28T04:25:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/namadhunagaram.com\/?p=1657"},"modified":"2025-11-28T04:27:25","modified_gmt":"2025-11-28T04:27:25","slug":"non-corrosive-steel-flyover-approved-across-buckingham-canal-for-ecr-omr-connectivity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/namadhunagaram.com\/?p=1657&lang=en","title":{"rendered":"Non-Corrosive Steel Flyover Approved Across Buckingham Canal for ECR\u2013OMR Connectivity"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Chennai, Nov. 28:<\/strong><br>The Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) authority has granted approval for the construction of a non-corrosive steel flyover across Buckingham Canal, aimed at creating a direct link between the East Coast Road (ECR) and Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Six-Lane Road Project Proposed in 2021<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2021, the Highways Department proposed a six-lane road connecting Thoraipakkam (Pallavaram Radial Road) and Neelankarai, covering approximately 1.45 km. This stretch would cross the Buckingham Canal, forming a crucial link between ECR and OMR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initial project cost estimate included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>\u20b935 crore<\/strong> for road expansion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>\u20b938 crore<\/strong> for constructing the flyover<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>\u20b9250 crore<\/strong> for land acquisition<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The government had approved the funding and awarded the contract for the project. As part of Phase 1, the Highways Department has already completed <strong>680 meters of six-lane road<\/strong> from Thoraipakkam Radial Road to the Buckingham Canal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Court Cases Stalled Road Expansion<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>However, several residents filed cases in court opposing the road expansion from the Buckingham Canal to Neelankarai. As a result, the work on that stretch had been temporarily suspended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>CRZ Green Signal for the Flyover Construction<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the Highways Department had sought CRZ permission to build a bridge across the canal. The authority has now approved the proposal. The planned structure includes a <strong>36-meter long flyover<\/strong> using non-corrosive, high-grade steel\u2014a first of its kind in Tamil Nadu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The total length of the flyover, including approach roads on both sides, will be <strong>around 300 meters<\/strong>, officials from the Chennai Metropolitan Development Plan (Highways Department) confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Two of the Three Required CRZ Clearances Obtained<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the three stages of CRZ approval required for the project:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Two stages have already been completed<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The final approval is expected in a meeting scheduled for the <strong>first week of December<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the final clearance is received, construction of the flyover will begin immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>First Non-Corrosive Steel Flyover in Tamil Nadu<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An official added:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis will be the <strong>first flyover in Tamil Nadu<\/strong> to be constructed using non-corrosive steel. The Inland Waterways Authority of India has also granted its approval.
