Chennai, Nov. 28:
To make public transport more convenient for Chennai residents using the Metro Rail, Electric Trains, and MTC buses, a unified digital ticketing app named ‘Chennai One’ has been developed.
The app was created by the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) and was launched in September 2022. So far, more than 11 lakh users have downloaded and are actively using the service.
In a new upgrade, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has introduced the option to purchase ₹1,000 and ₹2,000 monthly passes in a digital smart card format through the Chennai One app. This new feature was officially launched yesterday by Transport Minister S. Sivasankar at the Pallavan House in Chennai.
At the event, the Minister also distributed certificates and medals to all MTC employees in recognition of the corporation winning the National Award for the Best Public Transport System in the country.
Highlights from the Minister’s Speech:
- Many metro cities exist across India, but none provide a fully connected public transport network like Chennai.
- Tamil Nadu operates the highest number of buses in the country.
- Under the free bus travel scheme, about 12.5 lakh women travel daily.
- Special bus services are operated for school students across the metropolitan area.
- Ticketing machines are being used for issuing bus tickets, and now monthly passes can be purchased directly through the Chennai One App.
- Work is underway to introduce mini-buses that will connect Metro Rail stations with surrounding areas.
He concluded by stating that the government is committed to strengthening Chennai’s public transport system further.
