Algeria, located in North Africa, is one of the continent’s largest nations, sharing borders with Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, Niger, and Mali, and bordered to the north by the Mediterranean Sea.

The region was initially inhabited by the Berbers around 3000 BCE. Over time, Phoenicians, Romans, and Arabs influenced the land, with Arabic culture and language becoming dominant across the Maghreb region.
War for Independence and Nation Formation
In 1954, the National Liberation Front (FLN) began a significant struggle against French colonial rule. After years of conflict that saw thousands of lives lost, Algeria achieved independence from France in 1962.

Large parts of Algeria are desert and rocky terrain, with most of the population living in the northern regions where the climate is more moderate.
Language and People
Algerians primarily speak Arabic and Berber languages, and the vast majority identify as Muslims. Arabic remains the official language of government despite the widespread use of French in media and education.
Social and Cultural Characteristics
While traditional Islamic clothing remains common among women, many of the younger generation embrace Western fashion styles. French continues to be widely used in schools and media but is not the country’s official language.
